We arrived in Halong Bay this morning. It was a 3.5 bus ride to Hanoi, with a rest stop at a friendship type store along the way. Hanoi is the Capitol. It has a population of 6 million, with 3 million scooters. Traffic is crazy. Scooters don't obey traffic lights. Mom was't feeling well (I think too much rich food. She's better now.) and and skipped the walking tour through the old town. I lost track of our tour group and was afraid to cross the street on my own so I just joined another tour group to cross the street.
We got a bit of propaganda from our tour guide. Ho Chi Min is a hero in North Vietnam. Although his father was shot in the neck, he holds no animosity towards Americans. The soldiers were only following orders. If he didn't get shot, he would have shot the guy who shot him. He told a story so a group of American GI's who came on a tour and ended up having drinks with Vietnamese soldiers for 7 hours. We learned that Viet is a type of people and nam means south.
Last night was formal night. We had rack of lamb and lobster.
Old quarter.
Hanoi Hilton where John McCain was held for over 5 years.
The prison was built by the French to hold Vietnamese revolutionaries.
